How Blue Light From Computers and Phones Harmful To Skin?
Happy Thursday, babes! I had to hop on here and let y'all know what I just learned. From my title, I am sure you can guess what I am wanting to chat about, haha: Blue Light.
But on a serious note, how did I not know how harmful Blue Light is to our skin! I know to protect my eyes with some Blue Light glasses to prevent headaches and disruption of sleep. But now it's damaging my skin?!? I have gathered all the information I've learned, and let's dive in!
What is Blue Light?
According to Havard Health Publishing, "It is visible light with a wavelength between 400 and 450 nanometers (nm). However, it may be present even when light is perceived as white or another color.
Blue light is of concern because it has more energy per photon of light than other colors in the visible spectrum, i.e. green or red light. Blue light, at high enough doses, is therefore more likely to cause damage when absorbed by various cells in our body."
How is it harmful to the skin?
I read an article from Allure, that states "how blue light contributes to brown spots on the skin and hyperpigmentation such as melasma, and possibly to photoaging and the breakdown of collagen, which leads to wrinkles and skin laxity,"
There have been numerous studies indicating that it produces skin changes like redness and pigmentation.
"Dermatologists have good evidence to show that visible light triggers certain skin conditions, such as melasma, where the skin is stimulated to produce more pigment," says Marchbein. "There's also evidence that as blue light penetrates the skin, reactive oxygen species are generated, which leads to DNA damage, thereby causing inflammation and the breakdown of healthy collagen and elastin, as well as hyperpigmentation." -- Allure
After learning all of this the past few weeks, I have taken action! By implementing changes in my skincare routine to help prevent skin damages, especially since I stare at my computer for 8+ hours a day.
I am excited to share my partnership with Derma-E and providing y'all products that I have personally use to create this prevention.
